Frequently Asked Questions.
Q: How dry does my material need to be to pelletize?
A: Typically under 14% moisture is premium. We can pelletize up to 40% with certain feedstock, however for fuel pellets the feedstock needs to be below 14% to make a burnable pellet. Green wood chips or freshly cut grasses etc do not make viable fuel pellets. A drying system would be required for green wood waste. For certain feeds, bedding and fertilizer (such as chicken manure pellets) the moisture can be higher BUT mould can arise in higher moisture pellets.
Q: Do you sell drying systems for wet material?
A: No we do not build drying systems. We can point you in the right direction for US and Canadian customers who do build quality biomass drying systems these are typically for larger installations 1 tonne+ per hour.
Q: How big does the feedstock need to be?
A: For most pellets we recommend 1/4 inch minus grind. Hops and other heat sensitive materials can be ground through our 1/2 inch screen to prevent heat build up.
Q: Do you have PTO or diesel driven pellet mills?
A: PTO is possible . Please contact us for more information.
Q: What type and size of pellets can I make?
A: We offer a unique system that has many different capabilities. We can make 2mm small feed for fish pellets and up to 14 mm coal substitute pellets or horse treat size feeds.
Q: Why are your systems more pricey than others I see on the internet?
A: As with most things in life you get what you pay for! Our systems are hand built from premium parts from Europe and North America. We do not cut corners on bearings, gear boxes or grades of steel. Non of our systems use belts cast metals or other energy wasting components such as low grade motors. Our systems are designed to last for years and are built for the hard task of pellet extrusion. Also our systems include all necessary feed components, cooling, screening and controls all in one package - We also include delivery and installation in all our LM series installs. So you have the manufacturers setting up and training you on your system.
Q: How long have you been around? Can I go see an existing mill?
A: Lawson Mills have been manufacturing and selling in North America since 2008. In that time we have sold many systems throughout Canada - USA - New Zealand - and Australia. Our sister company in Europe has been selling for 20 years and have over 2000 systems in the European market. Visiting customers is possible, though this must be pre arranged through us for their privacy. We cannot guarantee a site visit. At non busy times we invite customers to our test facility in PE Canada where we can run a demonstration for you on our 20 Hp test mill.
Q: How big an area do I need?
A: Our LM series can comfortably fit into a single car garage sized building with an 8ft ceiling height. Our BN range are very compact and require a 4x4 space to operate. Our bigger bale processing and multiple mill lines do require larger areas. We can custom build feed bins etc to fit into trailers also for our trailerised units.
Q: Whats your biggest mill?
A: Our LM72XXT it is a 40 HP triple head roller mill that can be linked together for larger production.
Q: What guarantee do Lawson Mills have?
A: We not only build to the highest quality but we install personally on all our LM range. We also offer 1 year warranty on all our products ( excluding wear items such as rollers, dies, castback augers, and bearings).
